The Gies Family Centre- Hospice Waterloo Region
Waterloo, Ontario
New Hospice Facility
This new facility located on 5 acres of land in North Waterloo is all about creating a "home-like" feeling for those with an end-of-life illness and their caregivers.
The structure's architectural design was meant to mimic a barn-like structure and used unique products such as cryptomeria wood cladding for the exterior of the “Silo” Spiritual Room, located in the central courtyard, as well as cedar and pineboard elements inside and out. This structural steel framed building houses ten residence beds in the Cook Family Residence. Each room features its own private washroom, space for family members to sleep overnight, a private patio and beds that can go outside. To help deliver integrated care services the space includes a medical clinic, education rooms, a hair salon, day program and therapy rooms as well as a dining room and outdoor activities area complete with meditation garden, contemplation areas and walking trails.
This project was privately funded, including donations through construction by Melloul-Blamey Construction and trades.
