evolv1 - Net Zero Office

Waterloo, Ontario

Canada's First Carbon-Zero Office Building

As Canada's first net-zero positive commercial office building, this state-of-the-art building gives back more energy than it uses. Key sustainability features include: smart dimmable 1-10V LED lighting, geothermal heating and cooling system, a 40,000-litre cistern for rainwater harvesting, 1.5 acres of 700-kilowatt photovoltaic solar panels, triple-glazed windows, a 40-foot living plant wall and 28 electric vehicle charging stations. Since evolv1's completion, the solar array consistently generates more electricity than it requires to operate, part of the many eco-friendly measures designed to maintain the building's net-zero positivity.

Imagined by the Cora Group in partnership with Sustainable Waterloo Region, evolv1 was constructed according to LEED Platinum principles and has set a new Benchmark for Green Building Innovation. evolv1 has achieved dual certification under the Zero Carbon Building Standard, earning the Canada Green Building Council's (CaGBC) Zero Carbon Building Design Standard and the Zero Carbon Building Performance certifications. It is the second building in Canada to achieve both certifications.

Located in the heart of Waterloo's Idea Quarter district, evolv1 is part of the David Johnston Research + Technology Park at the University of Waterloo. The building's tenants include EY, TextNow, Sustainable Waterloo Region, and the evolvGREEN partnership.
